We all know the importance of staying hydrated to prevent dehydration and to maintain our wellbeing.
Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluids than it takes in.
Let us look at how to recognise signs of dehydration:
Feeling thirsty is the first sign.
Feeling your mouth, lips and eyes dry
Feeling unusually tired or lethargic.
Finding your urine is darker than usual or has a strong odour, or that you are passing less urine than usual.
Feeling lightheaded or dizzy, especially when standing up quickly.
Feeling your skin is less elastic and drier than normal.
Having a headache can also be a symptom of dehydration.
In severe cases of dehydration, people may feel an intense need to drink water; have an increased heart rate (palpitations); breathe quicker than usual; have sunken eyes; feel disorientated, or have difficulty concentrating and may even faint.
As you can see the impact of dehydration cannot be ignored and it is therefore crucial to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, especially in hot weather, during exercise, or when you are ill or elderly.
Consider the following tips on how you can stay well hydrated and incorporate bitter leaf tea into your daily routine:
Hydrating drinks
Water - The most essential and effective hydrating drink. Aim for 8-10 glasses a day.
Herbal infusions - These are great hydration alternatives and are often caffeine-free.
Coconut/rice water - Naturally rich in electrolytes, perfect for hydration.
Fruit-infused water - Add slices of fruits like lemon, lime, orange, or berries to your water for a refreshing twist.
Electrolyte drinks - Beverages like sports drinks or oral rehydration solutions can help replenish lost electrolytes, especially after intense physical activity.
Incorporating bitter leaf infusion
Morning routine - Start your day with a cup of bitter leaf tea. Its detoxifying properties can help kickstart your digestion.
Midday refreshment - Swap out your regular tea or coffee with bitter leaf tea for an afternoon boost without the caffeine.
Evening wind-down - Enjoy a warm cup of bitter leaf tea in the evening to help unwind and support digestion after dinner.
With meals - Drink bitter leaf tea with your meals to aid digestion and absorb its nutrients more effectively.
Blend your bitter leaf infusion with other ingredients - Mix bitter leaf tea with other ingredients to balance the flavour, such as honey, lemon, strawberry, mango, coconut water and so forth.
