Let’s talk about men’s health

As this is International Men’s Health Week, Respite Tea looks at why this is an important topic.

All over the world, it seems that men are unwilling to talk about their health, and Nigerian men are no exception.

Some of the reasons that may explain why some men might be less inclined to talk about their health range from:

  • Cultural expectations - In many societies, there is a longstanding expectation for men to appear strong, resilient, and self-reliant. Discussing health concerns could be seen as a sign of vulnerability or weakness.

  • Social stigmas – There is often a stigma associated with certain health issues, particularly mental health. Men might avoid talking about these issues to dodge judgment or ridicule.

  • Lack of awareness - Some men might not recognise the importance of regular health check-ups or might not be aware of the symptoms they should be looking out for.

  • Privacy concerns - Health can be a deeply personal matter, and some men might prefer to keep their health concerns private rather than discussing them openly.

However, talking about health can alleviate some of its barriers, such as:

  • Health inequalities - Heart disease and some types of cancer are more common in men than in women. These inequalities can be addressed and results enhanced by focusing on men's health.

  • Education and awareness - Men could live longer, healthier lives and have better general health if they were taught more about good lifestyle choices like food, exercise, and abstaining from dangerous behaviours.

  • Support networks -  Men's emotional and physical health could be enhanced by encouraging them to create robust support networks. Building relationships with friends, family, and healthcare professionals may help achieve this.

  • Role models - By continuing showcasing of healthy male role models, others will be encouraged to follow suit and this will help to foster a culture that values and prioritises men's health.

Ultimately, encouraging open and honest conversations about health, breaking down stigmas, and providing education can help create a more supportive environment for everyone.

Nigerian men, like others, can benefit from various health properties provided by bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina), as it is known for:

  • Boosting the immune system -  Bitter leaf is rich in vitamins A, C, and E, which help strengthen the immune system.

  • Improving digestion - It aids in digestion and can help alleviate issues like stomach aches and indigestion.

  • Anti-malarial properties - Bitter leaf has been traditionally used to treat malaria.

  • Anti-inflammatory - Its anti-inflammatory properties can help with conditions like arthritis and joint pain.

  • Liver health -  Bitter leaf supports liver health by protecting it from toxins and aiding in detoxification.

  • Blood pressure regulation -  The potassium in bitter leaf helps regulate blood pressure (hypertension), which is beneficial for hypertensive people.

  • Blood sugar control -  It can help manage blood sugar levels, making it useful for those with diabetes.

  • Anti-cancer properties -  Some studies suggest that bitter leaf may help inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

  • Prostate health - Research [see point 7] suggests that bitter leaf may help combat prostate cancer by regulating the spread of cancer cells.

In summary, by encouraging open discussions about health, promoting regular check-ups, and addressing cultural stigmas, men’s health can be improved. And in the meantime, why not enjoy the virtue of Respite Tea’ s bitter leaf infusion. These are available on our website or on Konga.
